Riviera Maya sets record for Highest Occupancy Rates

Riviera Maya, Quintana Roo – In a boost to Mexico’s tourism industry, the Riviera Maya region has set a new record for hotel occupancy rates. During the last week of February 2023, hotels in Riviera Maya reported an impressive 90 percent occupancy rate, the highest in the state of Quintana Roo.

The announcement came in a statement from Governor Mara Lezama, who highlighted that Riviera Maya continues to be a favorite destination among tourists. This news will surely be welcomed by the local tourism industry, which has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Interestingly, hotels in Riviera Maya beat out Cancun’s hotel occupancy rates during the same week, which were reported to be 89.1 percent. This may come as a surprise to some, as Cancun is often seen as the premier destination in Quintana Roo.

According to Governor Lezama, other areas in Quintana Roo also reported high occupancy rates during that week. Isla Mujeres registered an occupancy rate of 75.2 percent, while Costa Mujeres (Isla Mujeres mainland hotels along Isla Blanca) were 87.5 percent full. Tulum’s hotels stood at 87.3 percent, while Cozumel reported 86.3 percent occupancy. The hotel occupancy rate in Grand Costa Maya, in the southern area that includes Mahahual, reported 61.5 percent.

It’s worth noting that these figures are those reported by the hotel associations, municipal tourism directorates, and the Quintana Roo Tourism Promotion Council.

The breakdown of the influx of tourists, according to their country of origin, indicates that the highest percentage of tourists in Riviera Maya is from the United States with 37 percent. National tourism from around Mexico accounted for 35.9 percent during that week, followed by travelers from Canada, the UK, Colombia, Argentina, Spain, and France.

Overall, 479,258 tourists have stayed in the Mexican Caribbean so far this year. This is great news for the local tourism industry, which has been working hard to bounce back from the pandemic.

The high occupancy rates in Riviera Maya demonstrate the region’s continued popularity among tourists, and its ability to compete with other popular destinations in Quintana Roo. With its beautiful beaches, rich culture, and diverse attractions, Riviera Maya is undoubtedly a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Mexico.
